When our tutors were asked the following questions, this is how they responded:
- Hobbies:
- Auto mechanics, music production, science news and sports.
Why do you want to be a tutor?
- When I worked as a C.A. for a charter school, I don't think I have ever had a job that I enjoyed more. The style of the classroom was very different from a traditional school. Classroom instruction was limited, and every student was on a self-paced program. Because of this the students heavily relied on the C.A.'s for any help they needed. This enabled me to have more freedom in how I approached them in tutoring and strengthened my ability to adjust to different learning styles.
The students let me know very quickly that they enjoyed working with me because I had a knack for making things easier to understand. I really enjoyed coming to work and watching them getting a step closer to graduating. It was almost like having a team, and each day pushing that team to reach a goal. It gave me pride in my work and the students, that I had the privilege of working with. It was just an all around great job, and I'd like very much to have that experience again.
Why should a student pick you?
- I think the main reason students enjoyed working with me was my attitude towards them. I understand that every student is an individual and needs to be respected as one.
Communication is essential in figuring out their strengths and weaknesses. Learning how to use those strengths to overcome their weaknesses builds confidence and character that the student needs to know is there. I take the time to listen to the students and together we find the best way for them to understand the material and enjoy it. I've found that the easier you make something for them to understand the more they actually like learning about it.
Age is another factor. I'm 24 years old. I think the fact that I'm still a student in college makes them more apt to opening up and asking me questions. They're interested to know what awaits them after high school and I can give them some insight on what to expect. I think in general, the students feel more comfortable working with someone they can relate to.
Personal Statement:
- I recently moved from Henderson, Nevada back to California. While living in Henderson, working as a learning assistant was one of the best experiences I ever had. Working with these kids, getting to know them, and helping them realize and achieve their goals not only gave me a deep sense of satisfaction but also helped me to stay on my toes with my studies. It was a great way for me to earn extra money while attending college and gave me a great sense of pride by giving something back to my community.
I am once again looking forward to the opportunity to work as a tutor and mentor for our young future leaders and, if given the opportunity, will prove myself to be an excellent candidate for this position.
Any Last Words?
- If we keep hope alive for our youth,
then we keep hope alive for our future.
